Vision and Mission

The Florida Food Policy Council (FLFPC) mission is to create a more equitable and sustainable food system through collaboration and policy advocacy for the benefit of all Floridians and the environment. Its vision is to build a culture of health rooted in food justice and equity by connecting the community to their food and improving overall well-being. The council works to address gaps in the food system and advocates for policies that support food access, the environment, and community well-being.

Vision
A Florida where food systems are community-governed, climate-resilient, and environmentally
just—where land, water, and food are stewarded for the public good, and every person has a
meaningful voice in shaping a healthy and sustainable future.|

Mission
The Florida Food Policy Council brings people together across the state to strengthen food
systems in the face of climate change and environmental inequity. We connect communities,
advocates, researchers, and decision-makers to shape policies, practices, and partnerships that
advance food access, environmental justice, and long-term resilience for all Floridians.

Values Statement
Community-Led Governance
We believe communities should guide the decisions that affect their food, land, and
environment. FLFPC supports shared leadership, democratic participation, and long-term
community stewardship.
Climate & Environmental Justice
We center the leadership and lived experiences of frontline communities disproportionately
impacted by climate change, pollution, and environmental harm. Our work advances policies
that protect health, safety, and ecological balance.
Land as a Community Asset
We value land stewardship models—such as Community Land Trusts—that preserve
affordability, protect farmland, prevent displacement, and ensure long-term community benefit.
Equity & Inclusion
We actively work to dismantle systemic barriers rooted in race, income, geography, and power,
and ensure that historically excluded communities are represented, respected, and resourced.
Collaboration & Solidarity
We believe lasting change requires cross-sector collaboration. We build partnerships across
food, land, housing, health, and climate systems to move toward shared solutions.
Transparency & Accountability
We make policy processes accessible and understandable, and we hold ourselves accountable to
the communities and partners we serve.
Learning, Research & Adaptation
We value community knowledge, research, and data-informed strategies to continuously learn,
adapt, and respond to evolving food and climate challenges.

Goals
Advance Climate-Resilient Food Policy
Support policies that strengthen local food systems, protect natural resources, and prepare
communities for climate impacts such as extreme heat, flooding, and storms.
Strengthen Community Stewardship of Land
Promote land access and governance strategies—including Community Land Trusts—that
preserve farmland, support community food projects, and build long-term stability.
Expand Environmental Justice Leadership
Increase participation and leadership of frontline communities in food, climate, and
environmental decision-making spaces at local and state levels.
Build Statewide Food, Climate & Land Networks
Connect food councils, environmental justice organizations, land trusts, and partners across
Florida to share tools, data, and strategies.
Support Community Capacity & Power
Provide education, technical assistance, and organizing support so communities can advocate
for policies that protect food access, land security, and environmental health.
Sustain FLFPC as a Trusted Convener
Strengthen organizational infrastructure so FLFPC remains a reliable statewide hub for
collaboration, learning, and systems change

A Letter from Our Executive Director

The Florida Food Policy Council has reemerged with a renewed vision—grounded in justice, resilience, and community power. From hurricanes and housing instability to the fight for the Right to Food, our team has spent the past few years listening, rebuilding, and connecting communities across Florida. Through our partnerships—from One Community Grocery Co-op to the Right to Food National Community of Practice—we are cultivating a more equitable, sustainable, and just food future for all.
